Fierce femininity

Angel Locsin, actress

angel_locsin

When she was starting out her showbiz career, she was cast as a tomboy. That was her role as Charley in the GMA TV series called Click. It was also how she was in real life—a boyish athlete who was into competitive swimming. But fate stepped in, and one day, she was "discovered" by a talent scout. This was the beginning of Angel Locsin's path to super stardom.

Her breakthrough role was as Alwina in the fantaserye Mulawin, where she wore a more revealing costume than Charley's usual jeans and tees, and people began to take notice of her alluring figure beneath the feathered wings. This was when her career started to, er, take flight. She has since tackled other physical roles, as she donned the iconic costume of the Pinay superhero Darna, and transformed into a wolf in the top-rating ABS CBN primetime offering Lobo. On the big screen, her highest-rating movie so far is said to be Unofficially Yours, where she essayed another tough-lady role, this time as an ace journalist. She has appeared several times as cover girl for many a men's magazine where she simply exudes sensuality, and is hands-down voted as one of the sexiest women in the country.

But through all these, Angel says she maintains her boyish side, but usually sheds this when the occasion calls for it. One such occasion was the recent launch of the Slip Into fragrance by Avon, which she endorses. Here, she donned a figure-hugging lavender dress by Martin Bautista that showed off all her curves, along with sumptuous stilettos, in keeping with the theme of the event. "The fragrance of Slip Into is about the feeling of slipping into your sexiest high heels," she describes, and says she sprays on the floral-oriental fragrance when she goes out at night, while preferring citrusy scents in the daytime.

Her figure, she says, she currently owes to the Caveman Diet, where one tries to eat as Paleolithic as possible, without carbs, sugar, additives or preservatives. "It is hard to stick to the diet, though," she admits, "especially if I have to attend events like these." Another reason for her undeniable glow is her much-publicized relationship to Azkals football star Phil Younghusband. When the subject of her lovelife came up, she shares readily. "Kapag tayo ay happy, mas excited tayo sa life, masaya tayo sa lahat ng bagay na nangyayari sa atin. Malaking bagay ang love para makapagpaganda ng tao!" was her enthusiastic reply.

More than just a pretty face, Angel also uses her popularity to bring awareness for a cause she believes in. A recent survey showed that she was one of the most influential local celebrities on Twitter. "I actually did not create that Twitter account, because I am not a techie. People think that the 143 in my Twitter name (143redangel), stands for I Love You, but it us actually that hotline for the Red Cross Philippines, which made the account for me." But when she got online, she dove right in, she says. "It got to the point where I was tweeting about almost everything, like photos of the food I was going to eat. Then I caught myself and thought—wait a minute, would they still want to know about this? It just felt like I was just sending messages to my best friend." She says she is happy, that she is able to do her part, especially when calamity strikes. "I am able to let people know about the situation in one place, so they can get help—or give donations."

There are rumors going around the mill that she is being considered to reprise her role as Darna. Angel approaches it with some thought, especially since she says the project is still up in the clouds. "In a way, I feel like I have already done that. But at the same time, I am also glad that they are thinking about me. The fans, especially, are very happy. They have been campaigning for me since the beginning, and I am very flattered. If they do give me the opportunity, I can say that I am ready."

The courage she has to portray roles like this, she credits to her upbringing. "I would say that I was not sheltered. My training as an athlete helps too." Of course, one question to ask Angel would be to define the word sexy. She answers with aplomb—"I think confidence is really what makes a woman sexy."
